On Saturday evening, March 13th, the varsity boys’ basketball team did what thirty-two other Spartan teams have not been able to do and that is win the GHSA AA State Championship. The 2010 championship, at the Macon Centreplex came from a 77-65 win over a talented and well coached Thomasville team. The Spartans, 32-1, suffered their only defeat of the season during the final game of the Arby’s classic against a talented Memphis Melrose team.

In his second year as Varsity Boys’ Head Coach at GACS, Coach Eddie Martin was all smiles as the final buzzer sounded and his team began to celebrate on the Macon court. Martin told the PBA interviewer, “It’s been thirty-three years since GACS has won a state championship in boys’ basketball, so to break that trend means a whole heck of a lot to the school, the community and to a lot of folks who have played before these guys. …We knew it was going to be a tough ball game. We got into some foul trouble but so did they. That’s the mark of a good basketball team, to be able to play through the adversity.”

Two bus loads of Spartan fans traveled to Macon in support of the team. The sea of red filled the “home” stands, adding the final ingredient needed to help their team over the top. PBA game announcers were impressed with the well played and well coached game.

Thanks to Coach Eddie Martin, his assistants, a talented Spartan team, and a sea of red fans, the unfinished business in boys’ basketball at GACS is finally finished.
