Eighth Graders Jackson O’Brien and Mary Johnson were honored as the Junior High Mr. and Miss Spartan for 2010.

The Mr. and Miss Spartan award is an award chosen by junior high peers, recognizing one boy and one girl who have demonstrated leadership, friendship, and Christian faith to their classmates. The annual ceremony was held this year on Thursday, April 15.

Dr. Misty Overman welcomed parents, grandparents, students, siblings, and friends on this special occasion in April.

Eighth grade students submitted encouraging advice to sixth and seventh graders, in written form. Faculty sponsors Jami Denton, Jeff Harsh, Bob Lofton, and Joann Waldrop shared theses words of inspiration with those in attendance. Much of the advice included not procrastinating, staying out of the “drama” that presents itself in middle school, and staying true to yourself through any obstacle you may face.

Eighth Grader Elizabeth White offered the opening prayer. Andy Irwin read the opening scripture.

The 2010 Mr. and Miss Spartan Court included: Savannah Gray, Mary Johnson, Katie Jones, Ciarra McKinney, Paige Reynolds, Savannah Stewart, Robert Dicks, Connor Joseph, Jackson O’Brien, Jackson Rossborough, Landon Tabor and Sam Weyen.

Congratulations to all of the nominees and winners!

On March 19th, students in junior high traveled in two different directions in the Atlanta area to serve the community.

One bus of 45 students and 8 chaperones went to the City of Refuge to work in the “Compassion Atlanta” warehouse for the full day. These students worked very hard in a cold environment, but spirits were high and smiles were on faces as much was accomplished.

Thirty students and 4 chaperones also went to the City of Refuge to help clean up the location of this organization. This service will become a monthly involvement by junior high sports teams and other groups.

Another busload of 45 students with 8 chaperones traveled to Dunwoody Nature Center to spend the day cleaning up the area.

A total of 120 students with 20 chaperones spent this Friday in March helping the community. There was a since of joy among those who participated knowing that they had done something good for Atlanta.

jr. high football 2009 season

What comes to your mind when you think of Spartan football? I can guarantee that most people think of Friday nights, tailgating, and pep rallies- High School football. However, our Junior High football is just as important at GACS, if not more so because it represents potential and the future of football as we know it.

Varsity Head Coach Ken Robinson says, “Our junior high teams are extremely talented. Our eighth grade team had thirty-two players this past season. Our seventh grade had thirty-seven players. We expect the majority of these young men to continue on into our high school program next year and beyond.”

Our seventh grade team won three games and lost three games and our eighth grade team won five games, lost two games, and tied in one game. As with all our teams, however, more important than the final score is the spiritual emphasis. Coach Robinson adds, “I felt that our junior high teams were very successful this past season. We were successful on the scoreboard, but more importantly in areas that will matter for eternity.”
