Homecoming 2009: A Time for New Traditions

THE theme for homecoming this year was all about saluting the past and welcoming the future. As we ‘step forward’ in our homecoming history, we see that a couple of traditions have changed. We now have homecoming during football season instead of basketball, and in an attempt to make the event more exciting we have a parade of mini-floats, decorated and designed by none other than our own GACS students. All grades from the village through junior high created a float this year, in addition to ten clubs from the high school.
Mrs. Elaine Adams shared a bit about the introduction of floats to the event. “What we’ve decided to do is to present these floats at pre-game. There will be two representatives with each float and they will come down onto the track to show their float. Only the high school floats will be competing against each other.” The floats were judged and had the chance to win one of four awards: The Best Overall, Best Use of Recyclables, Best Use of Theme, and Best Expression of Mission of the Club. This year it was decided that all ten high school clubs would win for being the first group to participate in homecoming mini-floats.
For the floats to be eligible, there were certain regulations: regular red-wagon-sized and no more than twelve inches could be added to the width or length. As for the height, it could be as tall as five feet off the ground and while not required; using recycled materials was highly suggested.
The homecoming ceremony was held at halftime of the October 9 game. There was one boy and one girl representing the junior high, a boy and a girl from the village who served as the crown bearers, two girls and two boys from the freshman, sophomore and junior classes, and finally, six boys and six girls from the senior class. During the ceremony Joseph Arnold and Brooke Tabor were crowned 2009 Homecoming King and Queen by GACS Chancellor Jesse Long.
Mrs. Adams adds, “I love seeing the alumni come back. And this year we had a school-wide celebration and, a joint pep rally, to generate a lot of excitement. This is just a start, it doesn’t mean it has to stop here, it can always go much, much bigger. We want everybody to look forward to homecoming each year.”
If you are interested in helping plan future homecomings, see Mrs. Adams. The planning will start in the spring for the 2010 event.
Special thanks goes to the Homecoming committee: Dr. Ray Hawkins (director), Elaine Adams, Lana Garner, and Linda Burton. The GAC Marching Spartan Band, under the direction of Wes York, assisted by Robert Turner, added a special touch with their music. Thanks also to Tom Barlow and our campus services staff for their many hours of service.
